James A. (Jim) Underwood joined the firm in October of 2006. Jim received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Oregon School of Law in 2001, and his B.A. in political science with High Honors from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1997. He joined the firm in 2006, where his practice now emphasizes business practice, estate and tax planning, and state and federal litigation. Prior to his legal career, Jim participated in a variety of personal and professional endeavors including: involvement in the Boy Scouts of America as an Eagle Scout; running his own residential and commercial painting business; involvement in the U.S. Army ROTC; working in Yosemite National Park; and, counseling debtors as a consumer credit counselor.
Jim’s prior legal practice includes work with the Oregon Department of Justice, Financial Fraud/Consumer Protection Section, where he was involved in state and national consumer protection enforcement actions and litigation; service as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Kip W. Leonard in the Lane County Circuit Court, where he was exposed to both adult and juvenile legal practice and procedure; practice as a staff attorney with the Southern Oregon Public Defender in Medford, where he handled both misdemeanor and major-felony cases, including Measure 11 cases, and tried cases to juries; general private practice doing civil and criminal litigation; and, a variety of transactional work.
