He served as a captain for four years in the Air Force Judge Advocate's office before joining the firm in 1976. He handles the entire scope of local government law, representing many municipalities and special districts throughout the state of Oregon.
Mr. Jones is the attorney for the Oregon Fire District Directors Association and the Oregon Fire Chief's Association. He was co-editor of the original Oregon Fire District Directors Handbook and authored chapters in subsequent editions, has authored a chapter on special districts for the Oregon Law Institute, and is a frequent lecturer at conventions, government law conferences, workshops, and seminars. Speaking topics have included Oregon Open Meetings Law, Public Contracting, Fair Labor Standards Act, Directors' Duties and Responsibilities, Policy Adoption and Implementation, Conflicts of Interest, Dismissal and Discipline of Public Employees, and Local Government Budget Law.
He is a member of the City Attorneys Association and is past Chair of the Government Law Section of the Oregon State Bar. He was also a director of the Bar's Construction Law Section.
His experience includes labor law and negotiations. He has developed civil service systems for fire districts and personnel policies and procedures manuals for various entities and businesses.
In addition to governmental law, Mr. Jones's civil practice covers general business, employment relations, wage and hour issues, real estate, estate planning, wills, zoning and land use, and contracts. His speaking topics and programs include estate planning, wills, sales of businesses, and property transactions. He taught business law at the University of Alaska and has given many presentations on civil law topics.
